As we move into Spring, I thought it might be nice to share 5 of my favourite outdoor spaces to enjoy in Newcastle. These spots are brilliant if you are craving fresh air and some of them are perfect if you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Let me know your favourites in the comments.
1 - Exhibition Park
Exhibition Park is right in the heart of the city, just next to Newcastle University and the RVI. It is a brilliant place to escape for a lunch hour stroll or if you need a break from shopping with kids in tow. We also like to team a visit with the nearby Great North Museum if we are looking for a free day out.
There is lots of open space, flowers, trees, a boating lake, sports courts and play areas for children. Read more here.
2 - Jesmond Dene
Jesmond Dene is a little out of the city centre but it feels like another world. There are beautiful woodland walks to enjoy, a picturesque waterfall, bridges to play pooh sticks on, a play park, open spaces, picnic tables, pets corner and a cafe. It is the kind of place you can easily spend a whole afternoon. Read more here.
3 - Great North Museum Gardens
The Great North Museum is fortunate to have a vast open space and grassed area to the front of their building. It is a lovely spot for a quick al-fresco picnic in town in lovely surroundings if you need to escape the high street.
My top tip is to pick up a few treats and a takeaway coffee from Fenwick Food Hall, enjoy in the museum grounds and then pop in to check out their new exhibitions. A brilliant and relaxing way to spend an hour in Newcastle.
4 - NewcastleGateshead Quayside
The NewcastleGateshead Quayside is the perfect spot to enjoy a sunny day in Newcastle and there are lots of options.
You can grab a coffee and take in the views from one of the seats dotted along the quayside, you can enjoy a cold drink on the outdoor terraces at Pitcher and Piano or Tyne Bar, grab a coffee and sit outside at the Cycle Hub (the views from here are particularly good) , relax in a deckchair on the Quayside Seaside or grab a drink / bite to eat at By the River Brew.
5 - Newcastle Castle
There is a lovely patch of grass just underneath Newcastle Castle which is popular with office workers nearby looking to grab a quick dose of sunshine in their lunch hours and I don't blame them. It is a lush spot with a selection of nice trees, benches and the castle as the backdrop.
This area is right in the heart of the city so you are close to traffic sometimes but I say, just turn your back to the road and enjoy the green space anyway. Read more here.
