The prices and deals were checked and correct as of January 2020.
Many of the bars around Monument run Happy Hour deals too which is all the encouragement we need. If you are looking for the best value drinks in this area, this post is for you.
The Purple Bear
You will find The Purple Bear between M&S and intu Eldon Square on Northumberland Street. Be prepared to walk down a couple of flights of stairs but it is more than worth it. The cocktail menus are hidden inside of old kids books here and they show retro cartoons on the TV (think Thundercats and Ducula), the service is always on the ball and the cocktails are really well made.
They run various offers including hard shakes, special cocktails, 2 cocktails for £10/£12 (after 3pm I think) and deals on bar snacks too (chicken wings are 30p each on a Thursday). The bar has a laid back slightly studenty vibe and its a fab spot to take a pack of cards with the family or take a break from shopping with a cocktail.
Tapas Revolution
Tapas Revolution has a separate bar area (accessible from the entrance across the road from Fenwick) and is a nice place to stop and enjoy some Spanish vibes. They sometimes have live music and dancing over the weekend too. Happy Hour is Sunday - Friday 4-7pm when jugs of sangria are half price and large G&Ts are 2for1.
Beeronomy
If you're out drinking with a beer lover, Beeronomy is definitely one to try. You can enjoy a taster flight of any three beers for just £5 which considering a pint of craft beer can set you back £6/£7 these days is a great deal.
Find Beeronomy on Hood Street and expect a range of seating including booths and higher bar tables. Beeronomy feels a little more grown-up and more like a pub than the other places on my list and somewhere you can properly relax with a pint or two. Cocktails and wine are also available.
All Bar One
After 5pm Sunday-Thursday, the classic cocktails at All Bar One are just £5 each which seems like too good of a deal to miss. I do prefer a £5 cocktail deal over a £10 2 for 1 as you can order something different and it feels like good value.
I found the cocktails here to be pretty average but at £5 you cannot really complain. The prime Grey Street location and beautiful decor mean it is still £5 well spent.
Banyan
I just don't fancy Banyan (it feels like a bar that was only made for instagram to me) but a few people mentioned and recommended it to us and it is literally the closest bar to Monument so I didn't want to exclude them from our list.
Banyan offer 2 for 1 cocktails after 6pm daily (and they must be the same one). Like Las Iguanas below, I often feel like this feels like a bit of a con as I just imagine they split one drink between 2 glasses. If you are visiting with a friend and both like the same drink though, it only works out at £5 a drink so does not exactly break the bank.
Las Iguanas
The 2for1 deal at Las Iguanas runs all day every day and I do like the bar here. The drinks don't taste too strong but they are always nice and refreshing. I like sitting outside on a summer day.
Back in the day, cocktails at Las Iguanas were around the £6 mark and their 2for1 deal was a genuine bargain but now they have sneaked up to £12/£13 each, I don't think it is the best deal around.
Dat Bar
As far as I can see, Dat Bar don't offer a Happy Hour deal but their cocktails are really good / a little bit different and super reasonable at around £6 too.
Dat Bar has a hipster feel to it and is a bit of a tonic from the stream of flower walls that adorn Grey Street. They serve a cracking range of beers too and the best beer Steve has ever tasted (and still goes on about years later) was purchased from Dat Bar.
Pleased to Meet You
Pleased to Meet You is a popular cocktail bar on High Bridge. The cocktails here are pretty decent and if you visit Mon-Fri between 5-7pm, you can take advantage of their £5 cocktails.

Nitehawks Cocktail Bar
Nitehawks Cocktail Bar is an intimate venue next to the Theatre Royal. The bar staff here are super knowledgeable and they run £5 drink deals which are always something a little different and change weekly.
For more food and drink recommendations, make sure you are following Visit Newcastle on Instagram here.
A few other bars which I haven't mentioned (as they aren't cheap) which may be worth popping into are the Alchemist for wow-factor cocktails, Leila Lilys for beautiful concoctions, Lola Jeans for their fab North East themed cocktails, the Botanist for their fabulous roof terrace, Dacantus for Gin range and Harry's Bar as a good all-rounder.

Love this, you’ve covered all my faves here! I do also like the Tyneside cafe bar and their other tiny bar on the corner but I don’t think they have special offers on. I will definitely be heading to PTMY for a £5 cocktail soon, didn’t know about that deal. Thanks! Melis
ReplyDeleteThe title of this post really made me chuckle!
ReplyDeleteHow do I ALWAYS forget about Nitehawks, i've never actually been but every time I walk past I think "oooh must try there!"
LOVE Tapas Revolution, it feels like a secret bar that no one knows about, it's one of our favourites - especially love the jugs of Sangria in the Summer!
