Disclosure - I have put this post together myself with no brand input however the post does feature photos from a blog event (ad) at Tyneside Bar Cafe in November 2019.
Menus correct as of November 2019.
Where possible, I always try and visit an Independent Coffee Shop over a chain. I just think you receive a much better service, the quality is higher plus you are helping the local economy. Today I am sharing 5 of my favourite independent coffee shops in Newcastle - let me know if your favourite made the list.
Tyneside Bar Cafe
Tyneside Bar Cafe is probably the coffee shop I visit most often. It is conveniently located at the top of Northumberland Street, served fantastic coffee and food and is also a bar. What's not to love?
Address: 10 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle.
One reason I am proud to support Tyneside Bar Cafe is that all of their profits go back into Tyneside Cinema which is a fantastic building/charity/cinema Newcastle should be proud of. They do lots of work with the community and young people in particular.
I can highly recommend the Moroccan Sharing Board with a bottle of wine. The perfect tonic to Christmas shopping (and the generic Christmas markets outside).

Flat Caps Coffee
Open from 8am - 8pm Monday-Thursday and 8am - 6pm Friday-Sunday, I honestly feel as if Flat Caps in THE cafe to visit if you are a freelancer in Newcastle.
Address: Carliol Square, Newcastle Upon Tyne. NE1 6UF.
I used to visit Flat Caps regularly in their old basement location and back then, it felt like they were way ahead of the game with all of their fancy coffee equipment - now it feels like everyone is at it but Flat Caps for me are still the original and the best.
There are always people pitching up with their laptops, arranging meetings in town and catching up with colleagues. The vibe is relaxed and it is the kind of place you can easily spend a few hours over a few cups of (very good) coffee.
The staff are super friendly and Flat Caps is dog-friendly too!
For some reason, I can't find any of my photos from Flat Caps so you will have to make do with the menus to lust over. You can rest assured, the food is lovely.
Breakfast Menu (8am-4pm)
Flat Caps Weekend Menu 9am-6pm
Flat Caps Brunch Menu 11am - 4pm
Flat Caps Evening Menu 4pm - Close

Laneway & Co
You will find Laneway & Co tucked on High Bridge next to Motel One. It is a small but perfectly formed modern coffee shop serving high-quality coffee and brilliant value lunch deals (check out Honestly Helen's lunch review here).
Address: 17-19 High Bridge, Newcastle.
Laneway & Co is our favourite place to stop for a quick espresso in town.

The Journey host regular events from Supper Clubs to Yoga Classes and it is a lovely central spot to catch up with friends and enjoy a nutritious bite to eat.

The Teahouse (Quilliam Brothers)
Quilliam Brothers has been taken over by the owners of the super popular Butterfly Cabinet in Heaton.
This stripped-floor teahouse serves over 60 varieties of loose leaf teas and coffees. There is a small cinema too with regular special events.
Location: 1 Eldon Place, Barras Bridge Road, Newcastle (near Newcastle University and Great North Museum).
What sets Quilliam Brothers apart is that they are open until 11pm Monday-Saturday and a brilliant alternative to a bar for catching up with friends in the city centre.

I wanted to give a little shout-out to Pink Lane Coffee who also deserve to be on this list. I haven't visited in a few years though (ooops) and could not find much info online. I will visit ASAP and update this post when I do. Here is another lovely review from Honestly Helen to read in the meantime.
