The Hatton Gallery works closely with Newcastle University students and mainly stages modern and contemporary exhibitions. Various classes and talks are also available throughout the year. You can check out what's on here.
At the moment, there are three exhibitions on display. They're all completely free to visit and no tickets are required - simply drop in during opening hours.
ARTIST ROOMS : Roy Lichtenstein is on show until 4 January. Lichtenstein is one of the pioneers of pop art and this exhibition is really fun.
We loved the 'Wonder Woman' and 'Explosion' pieces but I think our favourite piece was his interpretation of 'The Scream'. The comic strip aspect of this exhibition makes it super accessible to all and it's a brill exhibition to see with kids.
Lother Götz : Fairground is also on show until 4 January. My quick mobile phone snap really does this no justice. I loved the sharp contrast of the abstract art with the traditional architecture of the building. I really think the wall paintings bring out the best of the room and it's a pleasure to walk around.
There are some lovely window seats in this room where you can sit and take it all in.
Last but not least is Heather Ross : All the better to hear you with which is showing at the Hatton until 15 February. This exhibition is pretty fun as the sounds of various birds are printed on cards/canvas and the viewer is encouraged to explore & interpret the words. Interesting stuff!
You can buy art supplies and gifts from the gift shop - they had some lovely cards on display.
We didn't spend long at the Hatton Gallery - maybe 20 minutes? We were hungry so didn't hang around. I'm really pleased we made the effort to pop in though and I'll definitely be back next year when the exhibitions are refreshed. Somewhere to keep in mind and pop into if you're in the area.
Photographs are not permitted inside of most of the exhibitions so apologies for the lack of photos in this post.
